Short Description:

Presentation of educational developments from the beginnings of modern Greek education to the present day. The periods of educational changes formations are studied through recent scientific articles and critical approach of archival evidence. Particular emphasis is given to the historical course of history teaching both in Greek education and in the international environment. The multivolume reading of historical evidence points to issues that are reflected, over time, in the scientific dialogue on education and history in Greece. Emphasis is also given on Local Educational History through the use of educational files.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

• Knowledge of developments in the education system in the national and international environment
• The methodological approach of the pedagogical, ideological and social issues that currently concern the History of Education in Greece and Europe.
• To highlight the interdisciplinary nature of the course through historical research and critical reading of archival sources and documents, which are of particular importance for the understanding of the issues of history of education.

Target Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Supervise the evolution of the educational system since the establishment of the modern Greek state to date.
2. Understand the role of education and in particular the teaching of history in the formation of national identity at national and European level.
3. Critically approach the characteristics of the educational changes - "reforms" from the late 19th century to the Transition.
4. Familiarize themselves with the methods of historical research, embracing the elaboration of original archive material, giving priority to the historical analysis of the evolution of the educational institutions of the modern Greek state.

Syllabus:

1st week: Presentation of the curriculum outline and subjects to be taught by the students during the current academic semester. Development of modules, information on targeting, learning outcomes and evaluation methods.
Overview of educational issues from the establishment of the modern Greek state to the present day.

2nd week: The actions for the organization of education and the establishment of schools during Greek Revolution. The Constitutional texts on educational issues. Study-critical approach to historical sources-evidence.

3rd week: The organization of the Greek educational system 1828-1863: the Kapodistria and Otto period. Study-critical approach to historical sources-evidence.

4th week: The Historical Background and Educational Developments in the Second Century of the 19th Century - The Legislation of 1895 and the Bills of 1899. Study-critical approach to historical sources-evidence.

5th week: The role of history teaching in the formation of a national identity in the 19th century - Critical study of school textbooks.

6th week: The historical (political-social-cultural) context and the educational changes after the rise of Venizelos. Reforms 1913 -1917 and 1929. The Educational Group. The Language Issue. Study-critical approach to historical sources-evidence.

7th week: The historical (political-social-cultural) context and education during the Metaxas, Resistance and Dictatorship. Study-critical approach to historical sources-evidence

8th week: The historical (political-social-cultural) context and post-war education: The 1964 educational reform. Education during the dictatorship. Study-critical approach to historical sources-evidence

9th week: •The historical (political-social-cultural) and educational changes during the period of the Transition. Study-critical approach to historical sources-evidence

10th -11th week: The role of history lesson in different educational systems. Presentation, comparisons, discussion.

12th week: Local educational history: Ideological dimensions and methodological prerequisites. Study of primary local history material in the local archives (internship at the archives of the ELAIA Institute and the GAK of Corfu) such as:
• History of schools or schools.
• History of Education Person (Educational Biography).
• Testimonies for educational things (teachers, parents, students).

13th week: Presentation of individual and group work by students - Critical commentary, self-evaluation and heterosexuality of work.
