Λίγα λόγια για τον τόμο:
Η πρώτη μελέτη που εστιάζει στην έκταση της γνώσης της λατινικής γλώσσας και του ρωμαϊκού πολιτισμού από μεταβυζαντινούς μελετητές (15ος - 19ος αι.)
Αυτός ο τόμος στοχεύει στο να καλύψει ένα μεγάλο κενό στη διεθνή λογοτεχνία που αφορά στη γνώση της λατινικής γλώσσας και λογοτεχνίας από μεταβυζαντινούς λόγιους από τον δέκατο πέμπτο έως τον δέκατο ένατο αιώνα. Οι περισσότεροι από αυτούς, οι μετανάστες στη Δύση μετά την πτώση του Βυζαντίου, ενταγμένοι αρμονικά στις χώρες υποδοχής τους, άσκησαν και τελειοποίησαν τις γνώσεις τους πάνω στη λατινική γλώσσα και λογοτεχνία, αρίστευσαν στις τέχνες και τα γράμματα και, σε πολλές περιπτώσεις, κατάφεραν να αποκτήσουν πολιτικές και διοικητικές θέσεις. Έγραψαν πρωτότυπα ποιητικά και πεζογραφικά έργα στα Λατινικά, για λογοτεχνικούς, επιστημονικούς ή / και πολιτικούς σκοπούς. Επίσης μετέφρασαν ελληνικά κείμενα στα λατινικά και το αντίστροφο.
Οι συνεισφέροντες σε αυτόν τον τόμο διερευνούν τις πολύπλευρες πτυχές της γνώσης της λατινικής γλώσσας και λογοτεχνίας από τους λόγιους αυτούς. Μεταξύ των πολλών θεμάτων που εξετάστηκαν στον τόμο είναι οι λόγοι που ώθησαν τους μεταβυζαντινούς μελετητές να συνθέσουν λατινικά κείμενα και να διαδώσουν αρχαία ελληνικά έργα στη Δύση και λατινικά κείμενα στην Ανατολή, το κοινό τους, η τύχη των έργων τους και οι σχέσεις τους μεταξύ τους, όσο και με τους λογίους της Δύσης.
Στα περιεχόμενα του τόμου μπορεί κανείς να βρει γνωστούς μεταβυζαντινούς μελετητές όπως ο Βησσαρίων ή ο Ισίδωρος του Κιέβου, καθώς και λιγότερο γνωστούς συγγραφείς όπως ο Ιωάννης Γεμιστός, ο Νικόλαος Σεκουνδινός και άλλους. Ως εκ τούτου, παρέχεται ένας κανόνας μελετητών οι οποίοι, αν και Έλληνες, θεωρούνται ουσιαστικά εκπρόσωποι της νεολατινικής λογοτεχνίας, μαζί με άλλους οι οποίοι, μέσω των μεταφράσεών τους, συνέβαλαν στην προσέγγιση - λογοτεχνική και πολιτική - της Ανατολής και της Δύσης.
