The seminar focuses first on how the Ottoman conquest of the Greek mainland and insular territory during the 15th and 16th centuries reshaped the urban landscape and the social organization of the existing towns and cities. The role of religion, the way that the Ottoman conquest occurred (conquest or surrender), the priorities of the Ottoman central authority, the physical environment along with the continuity or discontinuity from the pre-Ottoman past, are all parameters that are co-examined in order to study the social development of the cities. Also, pending to the sources and bibliography, the study of the development of the towns and cities continues beyond the 16th century. The cities and towns that will be examined are the following: Thessaloniki, Komotini, Serres, Ioannina, Trikala, Larissa, Athina, Mytilene and Rhodes.
