THE MEDITERRANEAN IN THE OTTOMAN PERIOD

The seminar focuses on the social and economic history of the Eastern Mediterranean during the Ottoman period. It begins by examining the Mediterranean as a space of conflict, pirate and privateer raids, and the trafficking of slaves, with particular emphasis on the activities of the Ottoman admiral Piri Reis. It then explores the region as a hub of economic activity, including trade and fishing. Finally, the seminar concentrates on the historical development of the most significant islands of the Eastern Mediterranean, analyzing the establishment of Ottoman rule and the limits of its authority.
