Maria (Mirka) Palioura was born in Athens. She studied French Language and Literature (BA) at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She holds a Master’s degree (D.E.A) in Art History from the Université Paris I Panthèon-Sorbonne and a Ph.D also in Art History from the Department of History & Archaeology of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens on The work of the painter Theodore Ralli (1852-1909): sources of inspiration - orientalistic subjects.
Her academic interests center on Modern European and Greek art of the 19th and early 20th century and travel literature.
She has contributed relevant articles in collective volumes and have papers read in international conferences in Greece and abroad and collaborated on research projects.
She has researched in public and private archives and collections and she has worked in the Greek Ministry of Culture and the Benaki Museum. She has ample experience having scientifically curated exhibitions and collections.
She has taught at the University of Ioannina, the Athens School of Fine Arts and the Hellenic Open University.
Member of the ICOMOS Greek department, of the Greek Art Historians Society and member of ASTENE (The Association for the Study of Travel in Egypt and the Near East), U.K.
