What is the ΛΕΥΚΙΟΣ Project?

The Λεύκιος (Leukios) Project is an interdisciplinary research initiative, led by the Ionian University (Dept. of History and Digital Humanities) and spatially focused on the Laurion peninsula, SE Attica.

It explores the historical landscape of the Laurion mining district employing and synthesising the methodologies of archaeology, history, social anthropology, geology, material science and ecology. The project focuses on the long-term interaction between humans, technology, and the landscape, from antiquity to the present.

The interdisciplinary research team enlists researchers and students from various European and Overseas Universities and Research Institutions. 

Archaeological fieldwork, undertaken in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities in East Attica, is confined on the slopes of the hill “Vouno Michale” and the in the valley system of Agrileza, within the Sounion National Park.
