Short Description:

It is a sequence of the course “Historical Demography I” and therefore its follow-up presupposes the assimilation of the main subject of inquiry developed in the course of Historical Demography I. The main objective of this course is the students’ experience and  practice on specific archival data (population censuses, etc.) as well as the application of the basic principles of the science of demography.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

The aim of the course is for the students to practise on specific archival data (population censuses, etc.) and to apply the basic principles of the science of demography.

Syllabus:

Week #1:
Social and economic crises
Demographic landscape management (urban-rural area)
Study of the modern press

Week #2:
Demography and morbidity, major diseases at historical time (plague, smallpox etc.)
Developing experience and skills concerning the problems of Historical Demography

Week #3:
Study of censuses
Research and practice in the study and processing of censuses

Week #4:
Reconstruction of families through genealogical research and imaging
Developing practical skills on the creation of genealogical trees (digital depiction)

Week #5:
Visit to the GENERAL ARCHIVES of Corfu and study of the demographic material

Week #6:
Special population groups (the case of Gypsies)
Study of historical resources

Week #7:
Special populations groups (Vlachs case)
Study of historical resources

Week #8:
Special populations groups (the case of “Tsamides”)
Study of historical resources

Week #9:
Special populations groups (the case of “Arvanites”)
Study of historical resources

Week #10:
Special Population groups (the case of “Pomaks”)
